About the project

The Mykhailo Drahomanov Digital Archive is an information resource of the Swiss-Ukrainian project Mykhailo Drahomanov: Switzerland on Ukraine's Intellectual Map of Europe of the University of Lausanne and the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. This resource provides open access to research results on the ideas, visions, concepts, biography, and creative legacy of M. Drahomanov (1841–1895) and promotes communication between European and Ukrainian scholars.

The Mykhailo Drahomanov Digital Archive has been created to implement the main aim of the project – the study and comprehension of the European and Swiss genealogy of the Ukrainian thinker’s ideas. As a political emigrant, M. Drahomanov chose Switzerland as the forefront of his activities and lived in Geneva between 1876 and 1889. He was the first Ukrainian political theorist to purposefully justify the necessity of a European choice for Ukraine. At the same time, M. Drahomanov defended the idea of a balanced and humanistic national policy in both Western and Eastern Europe, and above all proclaimed the inseparability of the Ukrainian project’s prospects from the broader European political and socio-cultural processes.

The Mykhailo Drahomanov Digital Archive is a digital hub seeking to compensate for the evident imbalances in the study of his legacy. At present, there is neither a complete academic edition of M. Drahomanov’s works, nor a systematic collection of his valuable correspondence. According to preliminary estimates, the scale of M. Drahomanov’s creative heritage amounts to 20–30 large-format volumes. Although at least several thousand publications in Ukrainian and Russian have been devoted to him, the largest English-language collection of works about him remains the 1952 edition of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences. Thus, M. Drahomanov still remains a little-known thinker in the English-speaking academic world.

The Mykhailo Drahomanov Digital Archive is an open science tool that ensures the representation of his life story, intellectual biography, and creative heritage, in particular their actualisation and visualisation. The Digital Archive’s tools are aimed at the long-term preservation and dissemination of the results of studying, systematising, and organising M. Drahomanov’s work. In accordance with Swiss and Ukrainian legislation, the Digital Archive hosts digital versions of publications that are in the public domain, as well as original works prepared and published within this project.

The Mykhailo Drahomanov Digital Archive is envisaged as a promising platform for further studies in Ukrainian and European intellectual, political, and cultural history.

Quote of the day
